I have almost all of his books and have read most at least twice. If you like adventure stories about the early frontier, Civil War, French And Indian War, WWI and Texas' struggle for freedom from Mexico, you will like Altsheler. His stories almost always revolve around a young hero who is surrounded by older comrades who somehow always find solutions to very difficult situations. Joseph A. Altsheler was born April 29, 1862, and died June 3, 1919. He was from Three Springs, Hart County, Kentucky. Thus, he had a good knowledge of the early struggles of our pioneers. The Quest of the Four is action packed. It revolves around the war between the United States and Mexico with Comanches and the search for gold, a captured brother and son mixed into this great thriller.Product details

Went through it quick. I like this author.
A little out of my "age/interest range, but an insightful look into the thoughts and minds of yesteryear
Mr.Alzheimer knew his stuff and tells it so well. so vivid, it is as if you are in the book. great for adults and children
Story line wandered a bit from start to finish. Author seemed to skip over details that in my case would have been appreciated. Ok bed time book, but far from the best of these old books that I have read.
It was a time of danger and living off the land . Texas was a vast and far land so vast it was a wilderness.
It's not Les Mis or Empire of the Summer Moon, but still a darn good tail of 19th century daring by four 'musketeers' and the Mexican-American War. I found it to be a real page turner. price sure was right.
Anything by Altsheler is a good read and this is no exception. Good description of the landscape, the ground, the terrain and as always the weather is vivid, the smells, the appearance of people, etc. Good action in this one, with the usual set of good and bad guys. If there's anything he could have raised his game on it would have been dialogue it gets the job done, but it's a little canned after you read four or five of his books. Still worth the read.
