Two years after her best friend was involved in a car accident that caused a traumatic brain injury, Lottie Anders is ready to start her freshman year of college. Ready to move on. Ready to start forgetting the night that ripped her life apart.

Her plans come to a screeching halt when not one, but both brothers responsible for the accident end up back in her life again.

Zack is cruel, selfish and constantly rubbing what happened to her friend in Lottie's face.

Zan is different. He listens to her awkward ramblings. He loves "To Kill a Mockingbird" as much as she does, and his dark eyes are irresistible. His words are few and far between, but when he does speak, she can't help but listen.

The trouble is, Zan was the driver in the accident, and now Lottie's discovered he lied to her about what happened that night. Now she must decide if trusting him again will lead to real forgiveness, or deeper heartache.

Oh Deeper We Fall how I enjoyed you. What a great read. I wasn't sure how much I would like it going into it, but I am glad I gave it a try. Zan was just heartbreaking to read. I loved him so much right from the beginning and everything he tries to do. Oh, I felt for him and how everything played out for him thus far. He is so much like Charlotte and they are so great together. Oh, such a wonderful story.

Two years ago Charlotte's best friend was in a car accident with Zack and Zan. Zack, who is a horrible person, but always seems to get all the girls, was in the car with Lottie's bff and Zan, who was driving. There is so much hurt and heartbreak there with Charlotte not really able to move on from what happened. Her bff will never be the same and she blames herself. She should have been able to stop it, even though she did everything she could. She always takes on responsibility for things she doesn't have control over. Much like Zan seems to do.

Zan has had a rough two years. He has paid for what he has done, but in some ways he is still paying for it. He has had a crush on Charlotte forever, but he never knew how to approach her. He is not a talker, he is very quiet, and he just doesn't know what to say. He tried that fateful night to finally say something to her, but it just doesn't work out. Then everything changed and now she hates him. Or so she says. But there is still something there. And what would she say if she knew the truth? Zan has been picking up after Zack for so long he doesn't know any different. And when Zack makes mistakes Zan feels responsible, even though Zan doesn't have anything to do with it.

Oh these two. They both take on so much responsibility for other and blame themselves for others mistakes. If only they would have done something, if only they would have said something or done something differently. If only. The two of them...oh they got to me. Zan is such a sweet, kind person. He lets Charlotte yell at him. He lets her do whatever she needs to because he knows how much hurt that night caused her. Only she seems to maybe not really hate him as much as he first thought. It seems like she might actually like him...oh it was a rough ride. Lots of ups and downs, lot of Charlotte not being able to reconcile what she is feeling and what she thinks she should feel. Lots of me just wanting good things to finally start happening to Zan. Lots of great story to read.

Through it all, through Zan and Charlotte trying to figure everything out, you also have Zack who is a horrible person stirring up drama. He just does whatever he wants and doesn't care about others. If he wants something too bad if you say no. He really needed Zan to stop cleaning up his messes. He needed to start taking responsibility for his atrocious behavior. I am glad he got what was coming to him in the end. It was a really great read and I can't wait to read the secondary character's stories! I hope they are just as good as this one was.

Deeper We Fall Fall and Rise Book 1 edition by Chelsea M Cameron Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This one had me hooked from the first page. I admired Lottie and her protective ways, the way she took everything on and loved so fiercely. She was just as equally passionate when it came to the hate she felt for the two brothers that changed her life and that of her best friend, too.

Zan was a beautiful lost soul who had been handed a s***ty brother. And no matter how much Lottie denied it she couldn't ignore their connection. This was a powerful story about moving on with life despite tragic circumstances.

"Some things were just broken and you had to put them aside and move on."

Despite his broken past Zan was determined to do the right thing by Lottie and, with the guidance of his counsellor, put things right. He was a fascinating and relate-able character. As a reader, you cannot help but fall for him.

I really enjoyed all the secondary characters in this book too. A great start to the series. I look forward to reading more about them all.

Actual Rating 2.5

This is the second book by Chelsea Cameron which I've read in as many days. I had some issues with My Favorite Mistake, mostly due to story progression and fluidity, and I was hoping another foray into this author's world would help me better assess her style. It did.

What this author does well is create characters who are witty and interesting. The dialogue and banter are refreshing and some of the narrative is quite insightful. Chelsea Cameron has a way of describing human emotion that is quite captivating and sometimes you can find yourself getting a bit lost in the imagery it creates.

That being said, I've found that in both books the storytelling tends to meander a bit too much. It's definitely worse in this book than My Favorite Mistake, but it does take away from both stories. What really sank this novel for me, however, was the overall pacing and some of the contrived plot devices.

In My Favorite Mistake, the relationship between the characters took the entirety of the book to fully flourish. While there were a number of secondary characters, the bulk of the novel's time was spent fleshing out the relationship between its two leads. Now, these characters were unknown to each other in the beginning and had no shared history so there was a lengthy "getting to know you" period. In Deeper We Fall, there was a history, a very unpleasant one. Unfortunately, the author didn't allow these characters the appropriate time to explore many of the deep seated feelings. Instead, the story zig-zagged around like a pinball, between Will and Audrey; Katie and Zack; Katie and Stryker; and Simon. There was so much going on, it never offered me the opportunity to sink fully into Zan and Lottie's story. There were far too many characters, way to many unneccessay stories arcs and, overall, just way too much stuff going on.

The first half of the book focuses on Lottie's loathing of the Parker boys. Shortly after that, there's a dramatic shift. What pissed me off was the missing angst. This was not a relationship struggled or fought for and it left me feeling completely unsatisfied.

To make matters worse, Chelsea Cameron does not seem to have a firm grasp on how to end a story. I kept flipping the pages, certain I was at the end, only to find another chapter. And, to be perfectly frank, none of it mattered. We had the resolution, knew how it was going to work out and, yet, the story kept going.

I found myself skimming through quite a bit of this book. There were a TON of scenes which could have been truncated or eliminated altogether. There was far too much extraneous stuff, and it made the whole book disjointed and unpleasant. I could simply not stay with the story.

I would recommend My Favorite Mistake, as it was far better written and plotted. This one... definitely not.
